Gloucester City Council boosted kerbside recycling by running a bold communications campaign using bin hangers, social media, and eye-catching banners on ten recycling trucks. Participation jumped as simple messages helped residents understand what they could put out for pick-up. To meet demand and keep collections running smoothly, the council added a short-term ‘mop-up crew’.
The pilot led to a 75% rise in kerbside electrical collections, with 86.6 tonnes gathered across 49,000 homes. The council continues to collect electrical items at the kerbside free of charge as of 2025.
