Home Basics made it easier for people in the Scottish Borders to pass on unwanted electricals through drop-off points, collection hubs, and home pick-ups. Extra staff were hired to make electricals safe for reuse. Items were sold at prices affordable to people on low incomes. Anything unsuitable for reuse was recycled.
The pilot collected over 40 tonnes of electricals and reused 2,240 items. Systems for logging and testing donations were retained beyond the pilot, providing insights into volumes and processing capacity. Two PAT testers were also kept on, at least until late 2022. Sales of electricals helped sustain the initiative.
