Flats collection

The Surrey Environment Partnership made recycling easier for people living in flats by placing 80-litre bins for small electricals in communal buildings. Many of the bins had battery collectors attached. Contractors with dedicated vehicles emptied the bins every two weeks. Clear instructions helped residents know what they could recycle, keeping contamination low.

The pilot collected 7 tonnes of small electricals, showing that simple, local drop-off points can work well in shared housing areas.

Surrey continued to trial collections from flats with a second round of Material Focus funding, granted in 2023.
