Local authority partnership officer

Job overview

As Local authority partnerships officer, you will support the Local authority and environmental partnerships manager on building and maintaining relationships with the 382 local authorities across the UK.

The focus of this role is to make it easier for local authorities to help their residents reuse and recycle their unwanted electricals. You will help support local authorities by supporting them to effectively use and develop our campaign communications, carrying out desk based research and communicating with potential local authorities about how Material Focus can help support them and encourage them to take part in the Recycle Your Electricals campaign.

You will provide high-quality support and administration and have experience working in a similar customer-facing role. You’ll be a self-starter who can organise your time well to prioritise tasks and deliver results.

Excellent organisational and communication skills are essential. You’ll be comfortable working both independently and with other team members as well as with external partners.

You’ll have an interest in sustainability and how we can change consumer behaviour for the better.

We work collaboratively with everyone from local authorities, businesses, and researchers to community groups and recycling professionals to help make it easier for the UK to reuse and recycle their electricals, and save precious resources from being lost forever. This is an opportunity to work for an award-winning environmental organisation that is gaining significant media and political interest.

We buy more and more electricals every day – but too often the old stuff we no longer want, use or need is thrown away in household bins or held onto because people aren’t sure what to do with them. This is contributing to one of the fastest growing sources of waste in the world and the UK: electrical waste.

Discarded, unwanted electricals that are thrown away pose a major threat to the environment and human health. Electricals also contain some of the most sought-after resources on the planet, like gold, silver, copper, lithium, palladium and platinum, which are lost forever if they’re thrown away.

Anything with a plug, a cable or a battery can be recycled – and over 75% of the materials can be reused so that we don’t have to mine for new ones.

The organisation

Material Focus is an independent, not for profit organisation on a mission to stop electricals being hoarded and thrown away, and ensure they’re reused and recycled instead. We fund technical research on the barriers to recycling; work with partners to improve the current systems; and encourage and make it easier for people to change their behaviour through our nationwide ‘Recycle Your Electricals’ campaign.

Recycle Your Electricals campaign objective

We throw away small electricals without even thinking about it, or perhaps we consider it but we’re too busy, and what would we do with it anyway? We need to stop people in their tracks, and give them a reason to think about it, talk about it, and do the right thing. We want to clarify what people should do, motivate them and make it mentally easier for them to act through a mix of behavioural interventions which we’ll be testing – like new kerbside recycling schemes, schools education & collection programs, and office collection trials.

The role

This role will help support local authority partners, ensuring that our communications materials are effectively delivered to local residents and communities to make it easier for them to recycle their electricals. The Local Authority Partnerships Officer will work closely with local authorities, councils, and other local partner’s to ensure we maximise visibility and engagement at a local level.

We’re a small but growing team at Material Focus (12 of us in total!). You will sit in the Partnerships team but will feed into other areas of the company – with potential to work closely with the Projects team as well as the Local Authority and Environmental Partnerships Manager. You’ll report into the Local Authority and Environmental Partnerships Manager who manages the wider partnership activity.
