Imperial College research into the air pollution impact of battery waste fires

This report, commissioned by Material Focus and research conducted by Imperial College London, explores the growing issue of batteries causing fires in the waste system and how they affect air quality. It examines three major incidents in Brentford, Herne Hill, and Silvertown, focusing on the role of lithium batteries in causing these fires.

The findings reveal how these fires contributed to short-term spikes in air pollution and exceedances in the WHO health guideline for PM2.5. This meant that thousands of residents in one of the areas were affected and advised to close their windows. With the rising use of rechargeable devices, the improper disposal of batteries is becoming a serious issue for waste facilities and the environment.

By shedding light on these challenges, the report highlights the urgent need for more recycling of batteries to prevent future fires and protect air quality.
