The South Tyne and Wear Waste Management Partnership trialled a kerbside collection for small electricals and batteries across Gateshead, Sunderland, and South Tyneside. Each household received a stickered bag and simple instructions ahead of pickup, helping people gather items easily for collection.
Despite COVID-19 affecting planned amnesty events, the pilot collected 24 tonnes of electricals and showed how clear, consistent messages can get more residents recycling at home.
The small electricals collection service is still running across South Tyne and Wear in mid‑2025.
